WETT inspections in Guelph and Wellington County

WETT-certified inspections of wood stoves, fireplaces, and inserts in Guelph and Wellington County for insurance, real estate, or peace of mind. Written report with clearances and chimney condition.

Wood heat is common around Guelph: century homes in the city with original masonry fireplaces, and rural Puslinch, Rockwood, Fergus, and Elora properties with wood stoves, inserts, or outdoor furnaces. Insurers routinely ask for a WETT inspection before they will insure a wood-burning appliance, and buyers want one before they light a fire in a house they have just bought. We are WETT certified and inspect across Wellington County from our Puslinch base.

Why insurers ask for WETT

WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) certification is the Canadian standard for people who inspect, install, and sweep solid-fuel systems. A WETT inspection report documents whether the appliance, chimney, and venting meet the installation code (CSA B365) and the manufacturer's instructions: clearances to combustibles, floor protection, flue and chimney condition, and signs of creosote or heat damage. Most Ontario insurers require one for a new policy or a change of ownership, and some require it on renewal.

What we inspect in Guelph-area homes

In city century homes it is usually a masonry fireplace with an old clay-tile liner, sometimes converted to gas and back. In rural homes it is a freestanding stove or an insert, often installed by the owner. We measure clearances, check floor protection, inspect the chimney and connector pipe for condition and support, look for creosote and signs of overfiring, and confirm the chimney cap and termination height. The written report is what your insurer wants to see.

How the wett inspection works

  • Visual inspection of fireplaces, stoves, and inserts for condition, installation, and clearances.
  • Chimney and venting evaluation for blockages, damage, and draft.
  • Creosote and combustion assessment for fire hazards.
  • Component and safety inspection, then a written report with recommendations.

WETT Inspections in Guelph: FAQs

How long does a WETT inspection take in Guelph?

About one to two hours depending on the appliance and chimney. It is often added to a home inspection on the same visit.

Does a WETT inspection include cleaning the chimney?

No. The inspection is an assessment, not a sweep. If the chimney needs cleaning before it can be properly inspected, the report says so.

Do you inspect outdoor wood furnaces?

Yes. Outdoor furnaces and their venting and clearances are included in WETT inspections on rural Wellington County properties.
